Exceptional and rare early 18th century Regence period Lyonnaise commode galbé (curved), handcrafted from select French walnut by master artisans in the region surrounding Lyon, circa 1720. Having a curved front, the drawers are arranged in a three-tier orientation, with four drawers total. On the top row, two half drawers are separated by a center square facade with exquisite rocaille carvings. The two rows beneath contain full drawers, which was typical of the period, with the same rocaille carvings. All drawers have beautiful gilt-bronze handles, escutcheons, and lockwork. Carved acanthus leaves adorn the front corners. Raised on short cabriole legs with sabot de biche. The lovely, rich patina of the hand waxed finish of this grand French chest of drawers gives the walnut an enchanting luster and enhances the overall desirability of this statement piece.
